Brianna South, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician
Brianna always knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals and has landed herself the perfect role as an RVT. She graduated from Seneca College in 2018 and joined the Champlain family in late 2019. The best part about being an RVT is being able to see very sick or injured animals recuperate with the devotion and care we provide to nurse them back to health.  While it can be challenging at times, it sure pays off! The thing she loves most about being at Champlain Animal Hospital is that it feels more like working with friends rather than co-workers. Brianna has special interests in surgery and anesthesia (making sure our furry friends have the smoothest anesthetic experience possible), with extra certification from the University of Guelph in Advanced Anesthesia and Surgical Pain Management Techniques. Brianna tends to spend her free time enjoying various motorized sports, as well as relaxing at home with her two lovely K9 girls Willow and Athena, as well as her lovely boa Medusa.

The 4DX test is a quick blood test that screens for four diseases which affect our dogs: Heartworm, Lyme, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is becoming more prevalent as the climate warms and more dogs (unknowingly infected) are brought into the province from other areas where mosquito borne diseases are widespread. In a few discrete areas within southern Ontario, such as Peterborough County, the prevalence of infection in dogs not on a heartworm preventive can be as high as 5% to 10%.* Local wildlife such as foxes, coyotes and wolves may be infected and be able to spread the disease to our dogs through the mosquito.
