Small brown dog being examined

Bloodwork helps us analyze your pet’s health and see if they may be suffering from underlying health conditions. They are performed almost daily by our veterinary technicians, and they are minimally invasive. Most pets feel little to no discomfort while their blood is being drawn. Please call us at 705.742.4243 to learn more about our bloodwork services.

Why are blood tests important for my cat’s or dog’s health?

Blood sampling is an important part of wellness exams, and allows us to detect (well before they display symptoms) if your pet has infections, diseases and other harmful conditions.

How long does it take to get blood test results?

Most of our diagnostics are done in-house, with test results available within 1 to 2 hours. We send more complex tests to an independent laboratory if needed. Results from those types of tests are received in roughly 2 to 3 business days.

How often should blood tests be done?

Frequency will depend on many factors such as your pet’s age, breed and any condition they may have. Since your furry family member should be visiting us for a wellness exam at least once per year, they should be getting bloodwork at the same frequency.

4DX Testing: A Quick and Powerful Screening Tool for the Health of Your Dog

The 4DX test is a quick blood test that screens for four diseases which affect our dogs: Heartworm, Lyme, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is becoming more prevalent as the climate warms and more dogs (unknowingly infected) are brought into the province from other areas where mosquito borne diseases are widespread. In a few discrete areas within southern Ontario, such as Peterborough County, the prevalence of infection in dogs not on a heartworm preventive can be as high as 5% to 10%.* Local wildlife such as foxes, coyotes and wolves may be infected and be able to spread the disease to our dogs through the mosquito.
